Dal Bati Recipe | How To Cook Delicious Dal Bati Without Oven?

Rajasthan is a land of rich culture and delectable dishes. Rajasthan dishes will never fail to amaze you with their distinctive taste and aroma. I like many Rajasthani dishes like Dal Bati, Ghevar, Gatte ki sabzi, etc. but my all-time favorite is Dal Bati. It is a dish where you enjoy Bati (wheat flour balls) with Rajasthani style Dal. No trip to Rajasthan is complete without tasting this classic dish. Make sure to add trying Dal Bati to your to-do list for your next Rajasthan trip.

But today we are sharing Dal Bati Recipe so that you can try it at home. You can cook Bati with or without an oven. The below recipe takes a look at how you can cook mouthwatering Rajasthani Dal Bati without an oven. Get ready with the below ingredients and you can create the taste of Rajasthan at your home.

Rajasthani Dal Bati Ingredients

Arhar (Tur) Dal, Wheat flour, Rawa, 2 cloves diced Garlic, Diced Ginger, One Chopped Onion, One Chopped Tomato, Sliced green chili, Garlic, Cumin seeds, Coriander powder, Red Chilli powder, Desi Ghee, Ajwain (Carrom Seeds),  Garam Masala, Turmeric powder, Asafoetida  powder, Dried Red Chili, Coriander leaves, Baking soda

Serves:  2-4 people

Rajasthani Dal Bati Recipe –

You need to prepare Dal and Bati separately to enjoy the Dal Bati. First, we are going to cook the Dal. In this recipe, we are using Arhar (Tur) Dal, you can add other pulses like Urad or Chana Dal or both if you prefer Mix Dal.

Dal Recipe –

1.  Soak one bowl of Arhar (Tur) Dal for 30 minutes, drain and wash the Dal with clean water.

2. Put Dal in the pressure cooker, add water to the cooker. The water should be about twice the volume of Dal (meaning 2 bowls of water). Add one tablespoon turmeric powder and a pinch of Asafoetida (Hing powder) to the cooker. Mix everything with a spoon and close the pressure cooker. Turn on the gas and wait for three whistles of the pressure cooker. Once you have heard three whistles, turn off the gas. Keep the cooker aside as of now.

3.  Now, we will be doing preparation to fry the boiled dal. Take a frying pan, put it on the stove. Turn on the gas on the medium flame. Put 2 tablespoons of Ghee in the pan. You can also use Oil or unsalted butter.  Add a half tablespoon of cumin seeds to the pan when oil or ghee is heated. Fry the cumin seeds on medium flame until they turn brownish.  Make sure you do not over fry the cumin seeds else they will be burnt.

4.  Put two diced garlic cloves, one sliced green chili, a little bit of diced ginger into the pan. Saute the mixture for a minute and garlic cloves will turn golden brown. Now, put the one chopped onion into the pan. Fry the mixture for 2-3 minutes or until onions get golden brown.

5. Add one tablespoon of red chili powder, half a tablespoon of Garam Masala, and a pinch of Turmeric powder. Adding a pinch of Turmeric powder will give a nice texture to the Fried Dal.  Saute the mixture well for a minute. You can sprinkle some water in the pan if the mixture is sticking on the pan. Keep stirring the mixture so that the complete mixture gets evenly fried.

6.  Now, we will add one chopped tomato to the pan. Saute the mixture for 1 minute and add salt (as per taste).  Cover the pan with a lid for around 2 minutes so that all mixture is thoroughly cooked.  Pour the boiled dal from the pressure cooker into the pan and mix everything properly.

7.  Add some water as per the desired consistency of the dal, cover the pan with a lid. Let the fried Dal cook for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, turn off the gas. Now we will be adding the tadka to the fried dal.

Preparation for Tadka

1.  Take a tadka pan (or any other small pan), put the pan on the stove.  let the tadka pan heated for 1 minute on high flame.  Put 1 tablespoon ghee and one tablespoon of cumin seeds.  Wait till the cumin seeds are fried and become brownish. Add a half tablespoon of red chili powder and one dried Red Chili.

2. Pour the hot tadka into the fried dal and cover the lid. Remove the lid after 1 minute and garnish the Fried Tadka Dal with Coriander or Cilantro leaves. Delicious dal is ready to be served.

Bati Recipe

1. Take two bowls of wheat flour (Atta) and half a bowl of Rawa (Semolina). Add salt (as per taste), a Half tablespoon of Ajwain (carom seeds), half tablespoon of baking soda, and two tablespoons of ghee.

2. Add around 150 ml water to the flour mixture and start making the dough. Make sure to add water in small steps as and when required. Knead the mixture until medium-hard dough is ready.

3. Apply some ghee to your palms and start making the round bati balls from the prepared dough.  The applied ghee to your palms will minimize the cracks in the bati.

4.  Take a deep pan, fill it with enough water so that prepared bati balls can be immersed completely. Turn on the gas and heat the water. When the water is hot, put the bati balls into the hot water. Boil the bati for 15-20 mins. Keep checking the pan so that bati does not stick to the pan. Drain the water with a strainer and keep boiled bati aside.

5. Take a frying pan, add around five tablespoons of ghee.  Heat the pan and put boiled bati into the pan. Keep stirring the bati so that the bati is fried and cooked from all sides.  Turn off the gas when all bati is golden brown. Delicious Bati is ready to be served with fried tadka dal.
