20 Best Hindu Mythological Shows Aired On Indian Television

The Indian mythology grapples with the stories of Gods, Goddess and legends taken birth to save people from the trepidation of demons known as ‘asuras’ and leading mankind to the path of humanity, truth and wisdom, enlightening them in capturing emancipation. Here is the list of the best Hindu mythological shows aired on Indian television that you must watch.

1) Mahabharat (1988)

Aired on: DD National

The famous Indian mythological show based on the epic story of “Mahabharata” was produced by B.R. Chopra , directed by Ravi Chopra and written by Pandit Narendra Sharma. The show was premiered on 2 October 1988on DD National. The title song consisted of two famous verses from the Bhagvad Gita followed by a narration by Harish Bhimani as a personification of Time, delineating the current circumstances and brightening the spiritual significance of the content of the episode. The show was the most successful Mahabharata series ever produced for television starring Nitish Bhardwaj, Mukesh Khanna, Rupa Ganguly, Gajendra Chauhan, Puneet Issar, Gufi Paintal. The total of 94 episodes were aired with last episode on 24 June 1990 delivering the message of victory of dharma over adharma.

2) Sampoorna Ramayan (1987)

Aired on: Doordarshan & DD National

The world’s most famous Indian mythology was directed by Ramanand Sagar by consulting the epic holy book “the Ramayana” by 21 different writers throughout the nation. The first episode was aired on 25 Jan 1987 on DD National and Doordarshan. Starring Deepika Chikhalia, Arun Govil, Sunil Lahri, Arvind Trivedi ,Dara Singh; the show was a success completing 78 episodes with the last episode aired on 31 July 1988. As soothing spiritual balm, Sampoorna Ramayan gives a lesson on our deep-rooted culture, traditions and the heritage of pure ethics and principles. 3) Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev (2011)

Aired on: Life OK

The popular Hindi Mythology premiered on 18 December 2011 on Life OK, directed by Nikhil Sinha, Ismail Umarr Khan, Manish Singh, Sayish Bhargv and Govind Aggrawal. The story is about an ascetic,  Lord Shiva, who fells inlove with Sati, the grand daughter of Lord Brahma and their relationship shapes the universe. The show starred Mohit Raina, Mouni Roy, Saurabh Raaj Jain, Puja Banerjee and Sonarika Bhadoria delivering the message of spirituality from “The Shiv Purana” to the audience. The final episode was aired on 14 December 2014 completing a total of 820 episodes successfully.

4) Vishnu Puran (2000)

Aired on: DD National & Zee TV

The Indian television mythological series by B.R. Chopra was premiered on 23 Jan 2000. It was directed by Ravi Chopra completing 126 episodes. It is hinged 3the Vishnu Puran, an ancient collection of stories about Lord Vishnu, the divine trinity of gods, who participates in epic events and delivers  profound spiritual messages to his devotees through his 10 incarnations. It also includes scriptures about the legend of Dhruva, starring Nitish Bhardwaj  and Vaidehi Amrute

5) Shri Krishna (1993)

Aired on: Doordarshan

The popular Mythology of Indian television aired on 19 July 1993 in Doordarshan was directed by Ramanand Sagar. The episodes  series is an adaptation of incidents of life of Lord Vishnu based the Bhagvata Puran, Bhramha Vaivarta Purana, Harivamsa, Bhagvad Gita and the Mahabharata. In 1999,the show moved to Zee where the remaining episodes were broadcast. The show was a success completing 221 episodes starring Sarvadaman D. Banerjee, Swapnil Joshi, Deepak Deulkar, Pinky Parikh and Reshma Modi.

6) Suryaputra Karn (2015)

Aired on: Sony Entertainment TV

Suryaputra means the son of Surya (the Sun). It was one of the most famous Karna’s name. The Indian mythology epic television series was premiered on 29 June 2015 on Sony TV. The show was produced by Siddhartha Kumar Tewary of Swastik Productions. The series trundle the journey of life of Karn, one of the greatest archer and a major character from the Mahabharata, the son of Kunti and the best friend of Duryodhana. The show completed  307 episodes starring Gautam Rhode, Pankhuri Awasthy, Saurabh Pandey, Shalin Bhanot.The final episode aired on 7 August 2016.

7) Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanuman (2015)

Aired on: Sony Entertainment television

The Indian mythology based on the story of Lord Ram bhakt, Hanuman was premiered on 4 May 2015 on Sony TV. The childhood and untold story of Lord Hanuman, who possesses various virtuous qualities, is considered the destroyer of evil throughout. Hence the name Sankat Mochan, are very well depicted in the series from the view point of Lord Shree Krishna and Devi Rukmani. The story by Brij Mohan Pandey completed 631 episodes with the last episode aired on 21 August 2017 starring Nirbhay Wadhwa, Gagan Malik Barkha Sen and Deblina Chatterjee.

8) Santoshi Maa (2015)

The Indian television mythological series, premiered on 20 October 2017, was produced by Rashmi Sharma Teleflims. The show was an amalgamate of mythology and drama. The story runs on 3 parallel tracks. The first story is about Santoshi, a devout follower of Santoshi Maa who believes that the goddess is the ultimate remedy of all desolation. The second track depicts the story of Devloka where all gods and goddess of the universe sojourn. Debouillon Santoshi with her alliance ‘Gau Mata’ (the cow) try best to help her devotees. The third track involves Santoshi’s greedy relatives. The show completed 499 episodes starring Gray Singh, Ratan Rajput, Ayaz Ahmed and Debina Banerjee. The last episode was aired on 20 October 2017 denoting a successful end.

9) Karamfal Data Shani (2016)

Aired on: Colors TV

The Indian television mythological series, aired from 7 November 2016 to 9 March 2018 on Colors TV. The show was produced by Swastik Productions, created by Siddhartha Kumar and directed by Kamal Monga, Sumit Thakur, Gurpreet Rana and Aviraj D. The show was based on the story of Lord Shani, who faced many hardship in his childhood, known for his wraths, seeks guidance from his mentors  Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The show ran for a season completing 346 episodes starring Karthikeya Malviya, Rohit Khurana, Kunal Bakshi, Tina Datta and Juhi Parmar. The recipient of many awards including ITA Award for Best Child Artist and Best Director, the show became very popular among the audience.

10) Mahakali Ant Hi Aarambh Hai (2017)

Aired on: Colors TV

The recipient of ITA Award for Best Television Show, the show was premiered on 22 July 2017 on Colors TV. The show was created by Siddhartha Kumar Tewary and written by Vinod Sharma starring Puja Sharma, Saurabh Raaj Jain, Meghan Jadhav, Kanan Malhotra and Nikita Sharma. The show  depicts the story of Debouillon Kali, the divine protector, about her different incarnations to protect the weak. She uses her cosmic powers to destroy the evil forces that threaten the world. The final episode of this spiritual show was aired on 5 August 2018 entertaining the viewers with total of 95 episodes.

11) Siya Ke Ram (2015)

Aired on: Star Plus

The Indian mythology drama epic TV was premiered on Star Plus on 16 November 2015, produced by Nikhil Sinha under the banner Triangle Film Company. The show proffered the epic Ramayana, the story of Lord Rama and Devi Sita from Sita’s perspective. The show featured Ashish Sharma, Madirakshi Mundle and Jayaram completing 326 episodes giving the spiritual oblation to the audience, the last episode was aired on 4 November 2016.

12) Jag Janani Maa Vaishno Devi- Kahani Mata Rani Ki (2019)

Aired on: Star Bharat

The Indian mythology series premiered on 30 Sept 2019 on Star Bharat was directed by Bhagwan Yadav and created by Rashmi Sharma. It is based on the life of Maa Vaishno Devi, an amalgamation of supreme powers, a force to save mankind. The series is directed by Mallika Sahaye and Dharam Singh, featuring Puja Banerjee, Maisha Dixit, Madirakshi Mundle, Toral Rasputra and Hrishikesh Pandey. The show has completed 149 episodes till now and apprehend positive response from viewers overall.

13) Vighanaharta Ganesh (2017)

Aired on: Sony Entertainment television

The Indian mythology series, premiered on 22 Aug 2017 on Sony TV, is a recipient of ZEE Rishtey Award and ITA Award. Vighanaharta means the ‘sentinel of tumult’. The show is produced by Abhimanyyu Singh under the banner of Cantoile Entertainment, featuring Nishkarsh Dixit, Malkhan Singh, Akansha Puri and  Rahul Sharma. Lord Ganesha is delineated as a young boy who believe in the power of scuffle, which eventually helps him succeed. Most of the stories are narrated to  Ganesha by other characters or by Ganesha himself.

14) Radha Krishna (2018)

Aired on: Star Bharat

An Indian mythology series, the recipient of ITA Award for Best Mythological series, is one among the most popular shows running on Indian TV. It is hinged on the life of the divine couple Shri Krishna and  Radha Rani, created by  Siddhartha Kumar Tewary starring Sumedh Mudgalkar and Mallika Singh. It premiered on 7 October 2018 on Star Sharat. The show is also broadcasting in Kanada, Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu and has completed 460 episodes till now.

15) Luv Kush (1989)

Aired on: DD National

The legendary Indian mythological series created, directed and produced by  Ramanand Sagar premiered in 1989 on DD National. It is a follow up of Ramayan. Luv- kush series covers the last book- the Uttar Kanda- of the ancient Indian epic the Ramayana following Rama’s coronation especially focusing on his children , twins Luv and Kush. The show completed 44 episodes in total featuring Arun Govil, Deepika, Sunil Lahri, Dara Singh, Swapnil Joshi and Mayuresh Kshetramade. Originally the show was titled Uttar Ramayan. The ending of the show left the viewers heart sobbing.

16. Mere Sai – Shraddha Aur Saburi (2017)

Aired on: Sony Entertainment Television

Mere Sai – Shraddha Aur Saburi is a hindi Indian television series, premiered on Sony Entertainment Television in September 2017. This show narrates the story about Sai Baba of Shirdi. He helps many people of Shirdi village and even fulfils one’s needs. He had corrected mistakes of many villainous and greedy people ( Kulkarni sarkar) who hate him and his teachings. He showed them the path of Dharma and made them, devoted only to God. The show stars Tushar Dalvi in the Lead role and in total there are 727 episodes of Mere Sai.

17. Vishwamitra (1995)

Aired on: DD National

An Indian Hindi television series of Sage Vishwamitra which aire in 1989, was produced and directed by Dasari Narayan Rao. The story of show follows the character of Kshatriya King Vishwarath becoming a Brahmarishi Vishwamitra the sage after a feud with Sage Vashishtha over the divine cow Nandini. The show has it’s original run on DD National, consisting 27 episodes in total. Sage Vishwamitra had a great contribution in Ramayana.

18. Jai Ganga Maiyya (1998)

Aired on: DD National

Jai Ganga Maiyya is a hindi mythological drama series telecasted on DD National. The plot of the TV program is that Ganga is a living goddess born from the divine feet of Lord Vishnu preserved in the kamandal of Brahma sustained in his locks by Shiva brought to earth by Bhagirath. The lead role of Goddess Ganga was played by Reena Kapoor. There are total 104 episodes of this series.

19. Mahima Shani Dev Ki (2008)

Aired on: Imagine Tv

Lord Shani, one of the nine primary celestial beings in Hindu astrology, is a mythological story where Shani is the God of Justice in Hindu religion and delivers results to all, depending upon their thoughts, speech and deeds (karma). Mahima Shani Dev Ki’ TV show breaks all the myths and misunderstandings about Lord Shani (Saturn), one of the nine heavenly objects known as Navagraha in Hindu astrology and encounters various situations that aim to dissolve all the misunderstandings surrounding his existence. The show consists of 30 episodes.

20. Jai Jai Jai Bajrang Bali (2011)

Aired on: Sahara One

Jai Jai Jai Bajrang Bali is and Indian Hindi mythological television series which was premiered on Sahara One in June 2011. The serial is based on the life of Hanuman, the Hindu Monkey God – Maruti, as he grow ups in Anjana Pradesh along with his mother Anjana and father Kesari. The show is directed by Ajay Kumar and consists of 1500 episodes.
