13. City view from St. Thomas Mount
History says that St. Thomas, one of the seven apostles of Jesus Christ was in the city during ancient times. St. Thomas Mount, also locally known as Parangimalai, is a small hillock in the south of Chennai where a shrine was built. It is believed that St. Thomas martyred at that exact spot. This shrine was the reason for Chennai to expand to the south and the birth of the very famous ‘Mount road’. The hill offers a stunning panoramic view of the cityscape.
14. The history of Santhome Basilica
The remains of St. Thomas is believed to be housed in Santhome Cathedral Basilica. It was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese but later the British reconstructed the cathedral to ‘Neo-Gothic’ style of architecture. This still stands as a functioning Roman Catholic church and was declared a National Shrine.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park or Vandalur zoo is located in the South Westen part of Chennai. Built in 1855, it is famous as the first public park in India. Spread over 600 acres, the zoo has mammals, reptiles, birds, and a variety of flora. The lion safari is one of the highlights spread over 75 acres. It requires a complete day to look around the zoo.

Olive Ridley turtles are one of the endangered species of turtles and luckily, Chennai still has these visitors. The turtles lay eggs on the shore during their mating season. Turtle walks are organized to save these eggs and are protected until it is hatched and is let out to the sea once grown. These walks are usually free to the public and are organized from Neelankarai beach to Besant Nagar beach stretch during January to March on Fridays and Saturdays.
20. Species of Crocs- Madras Crocodile Bank
Curious reptile lovers and researchers love the Madras crocodile Bank in South Chennai. It is largest crocodile sanctuary in India built with the aim of saving certain endangered species. The facility houses 17 different species of crocodiles along with snakes and turtles. Focusing on education, they organize workshops that include feeding and night safaris.
