How to start planning your summer wardrobe ?

If the long winter months are getting you down, start planning for your summer wardrobe and get excited about your clothes again. Summer is a great time to experiment with colours and patterns. However, it’s also worth considering sustainability regarding buying trend pieces and shopping on the Highstreet.

A capsule wardrobe is a brilliant way to save money, stress and the environment. British fashion icon, Susie Faux, started the capsule wardrobe trend back in the 1970s. Typically, a capsule wardrobe has 30-40 items that all go together. Did you know the average woman only wears 20% of her closet?

Here are a few things to consider when starting your new summer wardrobe.

Declutter your collection

Before you begin buying new things, you need to find out what you already have. Empty your wardrobe and go through every piece. A general rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn an item in a year, it’s time to give it a better home. Store specialist clothing, like ski jackets, holiday items and sentimental pieces in a vacuum bag. You can put it in the attic and grab things when you need them.

For the items, you don’t want or need, sell them on Depop, donate to a charity shop or recycle them if possible. Try not to throw your clothes in the bin when they could be of use to someone else.

Invest in classic pieces

Trend pieces come and go, but classic items will last year after year. Invest in high-quality pieces that can be used to create multiple outfits. When you are spending more money on an item, you’re likely to make sure the fit and style are perfect. Say goodbye to those ten pairs of ill-fitting jeans in the back of your closet, and hello to all things flattering!

High-quality women’s skirts, jeans and underwear will last through the seasons without becoming bobbly, distorted and faded. Style skirts with a floaty top in the summer and a thick coat in the winter. Genius!

Stick to a neutral colour scheme for your classic pieces, so they are easier to pair with vibrant trend items.

Styling your capsule wardrobe

Getting ready in the summer can be a flustering and sweaty experience. But with a capsule wardrobe, you can wear a killer outfit with minimal effort and time. Save your money for summer activities and holidays, instead of spending your earnings on cheap clothing. A capsule wardrobe also means fewer decisions, less stress and less clutter in your bedroom.  However, if you are a fashionista – you can still enjoy trends and buy a few Highstreet items per season. Once you’re done with them, make sure to rehome or recycle them. Sustainability will never go out of fashion.
